A training session temporarily disturbs a stable state. Heat, breathlessness, local fatigue and a passing drop in strength are departures from that state. Recovery is the return towards that balance, and it is during this phase that most of the adaptations described in the Adaptation pillar are built.

What the word recovery covers

The word is used for very different things, which do not unfold at the same speed.
  • The restoration of the muscle's energy stores, covered in the Energy pillar.
  • The repair and remodelling of the structures that were worked, over several days.
  • The fading of neural fatigue, distinct from local muscular fatigue.
  • The return of sleep, appetite and mood to their usual state, often the first noticeable signals.
None of these processes can be measured by sensation alone. The fatigue you feel and the fatigue that gets measured do not always coincide.

How to work through the pillar

The launch corpus covers a single topic, the best documented and the most decisive: sleep. The written page sets out the mechanisms, the sources and the limits; the video covers the same content in animated form.
That page describes what happens during sleep and why this period concentrates part of the repair processes. It also explains what research observes when sleep is reduced, separating what is established from what remains debated, and stating every time which population and which duration the observations were made on.
Two other pillars shed light on recovery without covering it directly: the Energy pillar for the rebuilding of the muscle's stores, and the Adaptation pillar for what gets built during rest.
The other topics — soreness, hydration, managing training load, active recovery methods — are not published yet. They will not appear on this site until they have been through the editorial chain described in the methodology.
Caution
Lasting fatigue and professional advice
Fatigue that does not lift after several days of rest, a prolonged drop in performance, settled sleep problems or a persistent loss of appetite are not matters for an educational page.

A pillar where the evidence is uneven

Body Lab only publishes a page once it has been through the entire editorial chain: writing, internal review, source checking and automated validation. Recovery is a field where claims travel fast and where the quality of the evidence varies a great deal from one topic to the next.
The launch corpus therefore limited itself to the best documented topic, sleep. Two pages have since joined it, and they do not claim the same level of certainty: hydration and performance is rated “probable”, delayed muscle soreness “uncertain”. That rating is shown on each page, next to what remains debated.
Publishing on a poorly established subject is no problem as long as the degree of establishment is stated. What would be fragile is presenting a hypothesis as a fact — and on soreness, the literature does not settle the matter.
